A BRIEF HISTORY

In 1963, The Faculty of Science Education and Teaching (FKIP) and the Teacher Education Institute (under the National Ministry of Education) were integrated into the Institute of Teacher Training and Pedagogy or Institut Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan (IKIP), and the Faculty of Language and Arts Teaching (FKSS) was de facto included as one of its faculties. However, FKSS was officially recognized in 1964 through the Minister of Higher Education and Science Education No. 128 of 1964 consisting 4 (four) departments and 2 (two) sections.

As time passes, in 1965, all sections under the Department of Indonesian Language and Literature Education and the Department of Foreign Language Education were changed into independent departments as specified by the instruction of the Minister of Higher Education and Science Education No. 5 of 1965 concerning the Implementation of IKIP State Curriculum. In the same year, the Department of Japanese Language Education was also established. In 1975, the Department of French Language Education was established to administer the education in academia level and to start administering French Language Bachelor Degree in 1979.

As per Government Regulation No. 5 of 1980 and the Decree of the President of the Republic of Indonesia No. 48 of 1982, the Faculty of Literature and Arts Teacher was changed into the Faculty of Language and Arts (FPBS) as set forth in the Decree of the Rector of IKIP Bandung No. 302/PT.25.R/E/1983 on January 24, 1983. This faculty presided over six (6) departments and eight (8) education programs. In this faculty, the Diploma Programs at the D3, D2, and D1 levels were phased out and, in 1991, the faculty concentrated only on the Bachelor Degree Program.

The transformation from IKIP Bandung to Indonesia University of Education (UPI), based on the Decree of the President No. 124 of 1999, had an impact on the institutional change of the Faculty of Language and Arts Education, especially in preparing the process of development and wider mandate of higher education. In the same year, the Faculty of Language and Arts Education opened non-education study programs of Indonesian Language and Literature, and English Language and Literature under the Decree of Higher Education No. 283/Dikti/Kep/1999.

As the legal status of UPI was changed under the Government Regulation No. 6 of 2004, turning the university into a State Owned Legal Entity University, all study programs under the Department of Foreign Language, including the German, Arabic, Japanese, and French Study Programs, were shifted into independent departments. Similarly, the Department of Sendratasik (Seni Drama, Tari, dan Musik/Drama, Dance, and Music Arts) Education was transitioned into the Departments of Music Education and Dance Education. Until 2014, the Faculty of Language and Arts Education had developed the disciplines of science education in the Bachelor Degree level under the 10 Departments and 12 Study Programs.

In accordance with UPI striving to be a Good University Governance, the Faculty of Language and Arts Education initiated the establishment of a new faculty named the Faculty of Arts and Design Education in December 2014. As a result, under the Rector Decree, the Faculty of Language and Arts Education was turned into the Faculty of Language and Literature Education. As the faculty development, the Faculty of Language and Literature also opened a new study program; the Korean Language Study Program.

VISION

The vision of the Faculty of Language and Literature Education is to become a leading faculty in administering language and literature education programs through international-standard management in 2020.

MISSION

  1. To administer language and literary education based on national and international standards in a conducive academic atmosphere in order to implement quality education, carried out by professional educators, and supported by adequate educational facilities;
  2. To conduct various research and development in the field of language and literature education and disseminating innovative research results at national and international levels using a multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach;
  3. To develop sciences, applying and utilizing research results in the field of language and literature through community services based on national and international standards for the welfare of humanity; and
  4. To build networks and cooperation with related parties, at regional, national, and international levels, in order to improve the quality of education, research, publications and, community service.

Objectives

In general, the educational objectives of FPBS UPI lead to efforts in developing people who are faithful, pious, moral, noble, knowledgeable, professional, religious, and have integrity and love for the nation and the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia. In detail, these objectives are as follows.

  1. To implement language and literary education which is based on national and international standards in a conducive academic atmosphere in order to implement quality education, carried out by professional educators and supported by adequate educational facilities;
  2. To implement various research and development activities in the fields of language, language education, and literature as well as the publication of research results at national and international levels using a multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach;
  3. To utilize research results in the fields of language, language education, and literature through community services based on national and international standards for human welfare;
  4. To build networks and cooperation with related parties, at regional, national, and international levels, in order to improve the quality of education, research, publications, and community services.

Quality Policy

  1. To become a leading faculty by continuously improving human resources, curriculum, methods, and learning facilities.
  2. The learning process is emphasized on developing knowledge, skills, and attitudes in order to create graduates who have great competence in the world of education, industry, or entrepreneurship.
