The Indonesian Language and Literature Education Program of FPBS UPI, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI), carried out a Community Service Program (PkM) entitled “Strengthening the Professional Competence of Junior Secondary Indonesian Language Teachers through Metacognitive Approaches by Integrating Artificial Intelligence in Pedagogical and Ethical Ways” on 18-21 July 2026. Carrying the theme “Reflective Thinking, Innovating with AI, Meaningful Teaching,” the activity involved 60 junior secondary Indonesian language teachers who are members of the Indonesian Language Teachers’ Working Group (MGMP) across Cianjur Regency.
The program was implemented in a hybrid format, with the first day held offline at the hall of SMP Negeri 2 Cianjur and the following three days conducted online via Zoom Meeting. Over the course of four days, with a total workload of 32 instructional hours, participants not only received theoretical materials but also took part in guided practice to develop metacognitive abilities and skills in integrating artificial intelligence into Indonesian language learning.
This program was initiated in response to the increasingly widespread use of generative artificial intelligence in education. While the use of AI opens opportunities for learning innovation, it also presents pedagogical and ethical challenges. Therefore, the activity placed metacognitive regulation, planning, monitoring, and evaluation of thinking processes as the foundation before AI is used as a learning support tool.
The materials delivered covered metacognitive regulation, pedagogy and ethics of AI/ChatGPT integration, metacognitive journals, prompt literacy, information verification, risk mitigation in AI use, preparation of learning tools, and the design of classroom implementation and follow-up plans.

The activity was also supported by the META-AI Guru application as a working instrument for participants. Through the application, participants completed needs analyses, prepared metacognitive journals, practiced using ChatGPT, developed learning tools, and prepared follow-up plans. The participants’ work results were documented as digital portfolios that can be reviewed again by facilitators after the training.
The community service team involved several lecturers and supporting staff from the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Program of FPBS UPI, including Prof. Dr. Andoyo Sastromiharjo, M.Pd., Prof. Dr. Dadang Anshori, M.Si., Dr. Ahmad Fuadin, M.Pd., Velayeti Nurfitriana Ansas, M.Pd., Dr. Tofan Stofiana, M.Pd., and Eka Rahmat Fauzy, S.S., M.Pd., whose expertise includes metacognitive regulation, pedagogy and ethics of AI, metacognitive journals, prompt literacy, learning tools, and technical support for the application.
This activity sought to strengthen teachers’ professional capacity so that they are able to use AI reflectively, responsibly, and in accordance with learning needs. The program was also directed toward sustainability through the preparation of classroom implementation plans and post-training mentoring in collaboration with the MGMP of Junior Secondary Indonesian Language Teachers in Cianjur Regency.

The implementation of this community service program contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 4: Quality Education, through the development of teachers’ professional competence and technology-based learning innovation. The activity also supports SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals through the strengthening of collaboration between the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Program of FPBS UPI and the MGMP of Junior Secondary Indonesian Language Teachers in Cianjur Regency in the sustainable professional development of teachers.
The program reaffirms its commitment not only to encouraging the use of technology in education, but also to ensuring that digital transformation remains grounded in reflection, pedagogical responsibility, and ethics so that technology can be used to create more meaningful Indonesian language learning.
